Two-day statewide enforcement drive: UP police fine 2,654 drunk drivers, collect ₹2.65 cr

According to a press release by the Additional Director General, Traffic Directorate, Uttar Pradesh, 2,654 motorists were penalised for drunken driving and fines totaling ₹2.65 crore were imposed after checking 69,683 vehicles during the two-day drive conducted on Saturday and Sunday. The operation covered 135 toll plazas. The campaign was led by DGP Rajeev Krishna with the traffic directorate coordinating with the transport department; district nodal traffic officers and circle officers supervised the operation, supported by assistant regional transport officers. The drive referenced data showing drunken driving as a contributing factor to road crashes in 2023 (8.61%), 2024 (6.05%), and 2025 (3.51%). Penalties under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 include fines and possible imprisonment for first-time and repeat offenders.

The drive continues on Sunday with field operations at toll plazas. Women police personnel engage with female travellers under a Meet and Greet initiative, and teams verify High Security Registration Plates on dumpers and construction trucks.
