Around 3:30pm, a blast ripped through the Vanaja Fireworks veranda at Kattanarpatti as workers were handling raw materials and finishing firecrackers. At least 23 workers were killed (19 women and 4 men). Three small rooms at the unit collapsed, and adjacent structures were leveled. Four fire tenders from Sivakasi and Virudhunagar fought the blaze, which was doused by about 8pm. The unit owner is absconding, with special teams formed to trace him.
