Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired a high-level meeting on Thursday with Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with representatives from Scheduled Commercial Banks and key stakeholders, to assess potential threats from recent AI model developments and the possibility of weaponising software vulnerabilities. She stressed the unprecedented nature of the threat, called for a very high degree of vigilance, and urged banks to implement pre-emptive measures to secure IT systems, safeguard customer data, and protect monetary resources. The Finance Ministry noted appreciation for banks' existing cybersecurity efforts and directed the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) to develop a coordinated institutional mechanism for swift responses. Banks were advised to engage top cybersecurity professionals and specialised agencies, maintain real-time threat intelligence sharing with the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) and other agencies, and report any suspicious activity or cyber incidents immediately.
