The plan outlines groundwater regulation, recharge through wells and wetlands, a digital groundwater registry, revival of choes, stormwater integration, smart flood monitoring, and policy reforms including mandatory rainwater harvesting and incentives for green infrastructure, along with solarisation of water works.

Why It Matters

If adopted, the initiative could improve water security and climate resilience for Chandigarh and promote sustainable urban water infrastructure.

Chandigarh to establish City Water Management Cell and reform plan discussed in meeting

April 27, 2026

Officials said a meeting chaired by Chandigarh MC chief engineer Sanjay Arora on Monday discussed establishing a dedicated City Water Management Cell. The plan proposes a multi-pronged strategy to reduce water losses and increase reuse, including groundwater regulation with strict control on private bore-wells and enhanced recharge through wells, percolation pits, and urban wetlands supported by a digital groundwater registry. It also emphasizes revival of natural choes, integration of stormwater with recharge systems, and deployment of smart flood monitoring mechanisms. Policy reforms such as mandatory rainwater harvesting, water reuse in building bylaws, and incentives for green infrastructure were discussed, along with energy-efficient measures including solarisation of water works.
