Mahana emphasizes women's empowerment as key to a strong society and political progress
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana on Thursday said that a strong society and meaningful political development are not possible without women's empowerment. He argued that special provisions are necessary to bring women into the mainstream and cautioned against politicising the issue. He stressed the need for consensus-driven efforts and referenced historical contexts, noting that women in ancient India enjoyed a respected position and participated in assemblies and committees, but their status weakened during nearly a thousand years of foreign rule. He urged that in independent India, it is essential to strengthen this legacy and increase women's participation in mainstream life. He highlighted initiatives under his tenure to give due importance to women in the House, including dedicating an entire day for proceedings to be conducted by women members and encouraging them to speak.
