"Shots fired upstairs" were reported by Mehmet Oz, who was evacuated with other officials as security moved to protect the president.

The room fell silent as agents moved through debris and plates crashing on the floor of the Washington Hilton, the hotel where Ronald Reagan survived an assassination attempt 45 years earlier.

The President and First Lady were quickly surrounded by Secret Service agents with weapons drawn and rushed off the stage and through a back curtain as the crowd crouched in shock.

Moments after the sounds, guests in black tie and gowns heard cries of 'Stay down!' and 'Get down!' as they took cover amid the chaos inside the ballroom.

Trump was seated on the stage during the White House Correspondents' Association annual dinner at the Washington Hilton when loud bangs disrupted the event. He and the First Lady Melania Trump were quickly surrounded by Secret Service and evacuated from the stage.
