Trial by fire: Agniveers came of age in high-stakes combat debut

Agniveers, India's youngest soldiers, faced their first combat during Operation Sindoor in May 2025. Officials credit their performance with validating the Agnipath recruitment model introduced in 2022, as AD networks and new systems played key roles in the clash with Pakistan.

Why It Matters

The results are being used to assess and possibly shape future defense recruitment and modernization policies, including how to retain skilled personnel after four years.

Operation Sindoor begins

May 7, 2025

The operation began in the early hours of May 7, 2025, in response to the Pakistan-backed Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. It triggered four days of strikes and counterstrikes with fighter jets, missiles, drones, long-range weapons and heavy artillery. Thousands of Agniveers across the three services operated specialised equipment and played a key role in ensuring battle-readiness alongside regular soldiers; their performance was described as being in the same league as regulars, reinforcing confidence in the Agnipath model.

Akashteer inducted as core air-defence system

May 2024

The Akashteer air-defence control and reporting system was inducted about a year before Operation Sindoor. It became the centerpiece of India’s air-defence grid during the clash and was integrated with the IACCS. The system supported a multi-layer air-defence shield and involved personnel across air-defence units.

Agnipath scheme announced

June 2022

The Agnipath recruitment model was introduced to keep the armed forces young and combat-ready. Under Agnipath, soldiers are recruited for four years, with a provision to retain 25% of them in regular service for another 15 years. The legacy system offered longer tenures with pension and other benefits, which Agniveers released from service are not entitled to. Eligibility was set for individuals aged between 17.5 and 21 years.
