SIT files charge-sheet against man accused of bid on Farooq Abdullah’s life

The next date of hearing was scheduled for May 19, 2026, as the case moves toward the district and sessions judge’s court.

The SIT filed a 600-page chargesheet in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jammu, in the case related to the assassination bid on Farooq Abdullah. The chargesheet states that the accused harboured bad blood against Abdullah for two decades and sought an opportunity to eliminate him. The accused allegedly held Abdullah responsible for terrorism in Kashmir, the mass exodus of Hindus from the valley, and the usurping of their land by radicals. The chargesheet was filed before the CJM; the case will subsequently be shifted to the district and sessions judge’s court.

Jammu inspector general BS Tuti formed a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) on March 14 to investigate the assassination bid. The SIT is headed by the then deputy inspector general (DIG), Jammu, Samba Kathua range Shiv Kumar Sharma, who is currently posted as DIG of the Udhampur-Reasi range.

The firing incident occurred in the Greater Kailash area as Farooq Abdullah and Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary were leaving a marriage function. CCTV footage captured the gunman approaching Abdullah from behind and firing a shot with a licensed pistol from very close range. Security personnel thwarted the attack and detained the accused, identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamyal. A case under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act was registered at Gangya police station.
