Upcoming four-nation Europe trip with UAE stopover scheduled for May 2026

April 30, 2026

PM Modi is expected to visit the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy from May 15 to May 20, 2026, with a brief stopover in the United Arab Emirates at the start or end of the trip. The visit will focus on trade and security cooperation, and on addressing disruptions from Ukraine and West Asia conflicts and energy and trade supply chains. In the Netherlands, cooperation will cover trade, green economy, water, health, clean energy, defence and security, with a potential semiconductor collaboration breakthrough and a Dutch semiconductor hub in Eindhoven. The trip will mark Modi’s first in-person meeting with Dutch PM Rob Jetten. In Sweden, cooperation on trade, innovation and technology will be discussed. In Norway, Modi will participate in the third India-Nordic Summit, with Norway being an EFTA member that concluded a 2024 FTA with India; the India-Nordic Summit includes leaders from India, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland. In Italy, talks will cover trade, security and people-to-people ties, with the India-EU free trade agreement likely to figure in discussions. The Iran-US conflict’s economic impact and energy supply disruptions will be topics across all legs. A UAE stopover will give Modi a chance to review bilateral relations with President Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan, discuss the Brics Summit to be hosted by India in September, and address energy supplies and the welfare of the Indian diaspora in the UAE.

Last year: Planned visit to Croatia, Norway and the Netherlands canceled

May 2025

In May 2025, Modi planned to visit Croatia, Norway and the Netherlands, but the trip could not go ahead because of a four-day India-Pakistan conflict following the Pahalgam terror attack, during which India carried out military strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan.
