Over 57% desilting of Delhi drains completed ahead of monsoon

Officials say desilting across 76 major Delhi drains has reached 57.68%, removing 1.65 million cubic metres of silt against a target of 2.86 million. Work on 21 priority drains has exceeded 76% completion, while the Najafgarh drain system is about 48% complete and the remaining 55 drains have surpassed 63% progress. A procurement plan worth over ₹94 crore aims to upgrade machinery, with 12 machines already procured and orders placed, along with measures to dispose of silt and monitor progress to finish before the monsoon.

The Irrigation and Flood Control Department reported that desilting across 76 major drains has reached 57.68%, with over 1.65 million cubic metres of silt removed against a target of 2.86 million cubic metres. Work on 21 priority drains has crossed 76% completion. The Najafgarh drain system has completed nearly 48%, while the remaining 55 drains have achieved over 63% progress. Work is being carried out simultaneously across multiple locations, focusing on vulnerable points identified from previous seasons. A procurement plan worth over ₹94 crore aims to upgrade mechanical capacity, including 38 specialised machines; 12 machines have been procured and orders placed for others. Proper disposal of silt, regular field inspections, and real-time monitoring are in place to maintain progress and quality, with the aim to finish the remaining desilting before the peak monsoon period.
