MCG proposes smart street lights on 10 major Gurugram roads; awaits approval

April 30, 2026

The Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) plans to install smart street lighting on at least 10 major city roads modeled on Connaught Place. The proposal includes multi-functional street poles with features such as public announcement systems, emergency alerts, and integrated cameras in select areas, and has been sent to the Urban Local Bodies Department Haryana for approval. The system is to be integrated with a centralised control and monitoring system (CCMS) for real-time tracking and maintenance, enabling quick fault identification and timely repairs. CCTV cameras are also planned at key locations to strengthen surveillance and public safety. Locations were identified through a ground survey prioritising areas with poor visibility, safety concerns and inadequate lighting. The project aims to improve night-time visibility and security in residential and commercial zones. As of now, Gurugram has about 120,000 street lights, with gaps due to malfunctioning systems and poorly lit areas. If approved, the plan would lead to more uniform illumination. Officials noted that previous modernisation efforts faced delays due to payment disputes and technical issues, including a 2017 PPP project that installed 798 panels against a target of 1,405.
