MCD launches Delhi-wide survey to identify misuse of residential premises following Supreme Court directions

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has begun a citywide survey to identify residential premises used for non-residential or commercial purposes, in line with a Supreme Court directive. The effort involves zone-wise inspections, documentation for an affidavit to the court, and accountability measures for discrepancies. A BJP spokesperson criticized the timeline as potentially inadequate.

Why It Matters

The survey results will underpin an affidavit to the Supreme Court and could lead to action against violators, with officials held accountable for omissions or errors.

MCD begins citywide survey to identify misuse of residential premises

April 24, 2026

MCD commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar instructed all zonal deputy commissioners to carry out a time-bound exercise across areas designated exclusively for residential use. The survey will cover unauthorised and regularised colonies, group-housing societies, and plotted developments, including pockets within and around MCD limits. Field inspections will verify data and prepare zone-wise lists of violations, with findings documented for an affidavit to be submitted to the Supreme Court. Senior officials will ensure accountability for omissions or discrepancies. Zonal reports must be submitted within seven days to the additional commissioner (engineering) for consolidation; the affidavit will be validated by a senior authority.
