Kerala Assembly Elections 2026: CPI(M)’s Vypeen plan falls flat as Chammany breaches Left bastion

Tony Chammany of the United Democratic Front won the Vypeen seat by 15,648 votes over CPI(M) candidate M.B. Shiny, with 66,112 votes to 50,464. Anitha Thomas (Twenty20) finished third with 13,637 votes on the NDA ticket. The result marks a break in a Left-dominated history for Vypeen since its creation in 2011, while the Left Front also lost Thripunithura in the district overall.

Why It Matters

The win signals a shift in political dynamics within the district and could influence the broader trajectory of the Kerala Assembly elections, challenging the Left’s hold in a key coastal constituency.

Vypeen results announced: Chammany defeats Shiny by 15,648 votes

May 04, 2026

In the coastal Vypeen constituency, Tony Chammany of the United Democratic Front won the seat by a margin of 15,648 votes over CPI(M) candidate M.B. Shiny. Chammany received 66,112 votes, while Shiny gathered 50,464. Anitha Thomas of Twenty20 finished third with 13,637 votes on the NDA ticket. The victory represents a breach of a Left bastion in the district, as Vypeen has elected CPI(M) candidates since the constituency's creation in 2011 following delimitation. The CPI(M) fielded Shiny after shifting incumbent MLA K.N. Unnikrishnan to Thripunithura in a bid to retain Vypeen and challenge Thripunithura, but the plan did not work, and the Left Front lost both seats in the district.
