HSPCB to test bioremediation in Gurugram Leg-II drain to curb pollution
The Haryana State Pollution Control Board and civic bodies will conduct a two-month bioremediation trial in the Leg-II drain in Gurugram to reduce pollution. The trial involves introducing microbes or enzymes at key points, with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority tasked to carry it out. The initiative follows a high-level review urging the use of new technologies to speed up drain cleaning and reduce effluent pollution.
Why It Matters
The trial targets reducing organic pollutants and improving water quality in a heavily polluted drain that collects effluent from numerous industries, potentially lowering BOD levels if successful.

GMDA directed to carry out the bioremediation exercise
The Haryana State Pollution Control Board directed the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority to carry out the bioremediation exercise as part of the trial.
Inspections and enforcement actions planned
Regular inspections of industries are being carried out. Strict action, including closure orders, will be issued for industries found illegally discharging untreated water into the drains.
Illegal discharge points identified
Civic bodies identified multiple illegal discharge points across Ashok Vihar, Rajendra Park, West Rajeev Nagar, near CRPF camp chowk, Dharampur Village, Bhimgarh Kheri, Jahajgarh Village, and the Sector 27/43 dividing road.
Discharge points and volumes noted
Around 237 industries discharge 7.46 MLD of treated and 46 MLD of untreated effluent into the Leg-II drain. Twenty discharge points releasing 78 MLD are likely to be tapped and disconnected by June, while eight points discharging 32 MLD have already been diverted.
Leg-II drain length and route outlined
The Leg-II drain runs 16.5 km underground from Sector 42 to Sector 107 via Huda City Centre. It carries effluent from Gurugram and joins the Najafgarh drain before merging with the Yamuna downstream of the Wazirabad barrage.
Bioremediation trial announced for Leg-II drain
The Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB), with civic bodies, announced a two-month bioremediation trial to be conducted in the Leg-II drain in Gurugram to reduce pollution. Microbes or enzymes will be introduced at key points to break down organic pollutants in the water, as part of the trial coordinated by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA).
Directorate review and directive on technologies
A high-level review by the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change this week directed authorities to adopt new technologies and speed up drain-cleaning efforts.
