During a press briefing at the Government Circuit House in Gandhinagar, officials from the Directorate of Census Operations, Gujarat, outlined preparatory steps for the 2027 Census, signaling a shift toward digital-first data collection. They announced that, for the first time in the history of the Indian Census, citizens will be able to submit their household details through a dedicated online self-enumeration portal. The self-enumeration window is scheduled to run from May 17 to May 31, 2026. After this phase, House Listing Operations will transition to field data collection from June 1 to June 30, 2026, with census functionaries using a specially designed mobile application, the HLO App, to record data digitally, replacing paper forms to speed processing and improve accuracy.
