ECI rolls out Phase III voter roll revision across 16 states and 3 UTs

The Election Commission of India directed chief electoral officers to begin Phase III of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) across 16 states and three Union Territories, covering 367.3 million electors, while excluding Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh for now. The plan spans seven tranches from late May to December, with training and house-to-house visits beginning in May and final rolls publication staggered through the year. The ECI highlighted the roles of BLOs and BLAs and aligned the schedule with the ongoing Census exercise.

Why It Matters

Phase III aims to ensure only eligible voters are on the electoral rolls and to enhance transparency and participation in the revision process through substantial field activity and party involvement.
