Delhi judges grapple with rising threats and little protection

The Delhi High Court heard concerns about rising threats and intimidation against district court judges, highlighting a lack of basic security cover for most judicial officers. The report outlines petitions for PSOs, incidents of threats, and a High Court directive to review security schemes across states.

Why It Matters

Judicial security is essential for maintaining the independence and effectiveness of the judiciary. Inadequate protection can deter judges from performing duties and erode public trust in the justice system.

It noted that Delhi has more than 800 district judges and that providing round-the-clock PSOs to all would require about 2,400 personnel; currently only about 10 to 12 judges have PSOs, and these are not on a 24/7 basis.
