Launch of five-day rescue drive to shelter homeless and destitute
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off 99 special rescue ambulances and 10 support vehicles from Jan Sewa Sadan to identify homeless, abandoned, sick and differently-abled persons across all 13 Delhi districts and shift them to shelters. Nearly 100 staff members and 50 volunteers will work round-the-clock. Rescue teams will identify people living on roads, railway stations, bus stands, religious places and other public areas and move them to shelters. Priority is given to those suffering from serious illnesses such as tuberculosis, cancer and AIDS, who will be provided shelter, treatment and proper care. Those rescued will be accommodated at Apna Ghar Ashram, with arrangements for up to 500 destitute persons (100 beds for women, 400 for men). After recovery, reunification with families will be sought where possible; those without family support will continue to receive care at the Ashram. The five-day campaign will conclude on May 15, with the government aiming to provide immediate assistance to more than 300 vulnerable people.
