Death toll in Kyiv apartment building attack rises to 24

A Ukrainian drone attack on Ryazan, about 100 kilometres southeast of Moscow, killed four people, including a child, according to the Ryazan Governor; a fire at a local oil refinery followed.

Russia's Defence Ministry said air defences downed 355 drones overnight, describing it as part of one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks of the war.

205 prisoners from each country returned home in what was described as the first phase of a planned 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner swap. Some Ukrainians released had been held since 2022. Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed the exchange and thanked the United Arab Emirates for broker involvement.

The Ukrainian capital observed an official day of mourning in remembrance of those killed, and President Zelenskyy visited the site.

Emergency workers finished digging through the building's rubble after more than a day since the attack.

Zelenskyy said the cruise missile that hit the apartment building was built in the second quarter of the year, suggesting Russia continues importing components to produce missiles in circumvention of sanctions and calling for action against sanctions evasion.

Several airports suspended flights overnight because of the attacks.

Zelenskyy said Moscow had launched more than 1,560 drones against Ukrainian population centres since Wednesday, with about 180 sites damaged across the country, including more than 50 residential buildings.

A Russian cruise missile struck a nine-story Kyiv apartment building during what the Ukrainian air force described as Russia's biggest barrage since the invasion. The attack killed 24 people, including three teenagers, and wounded 48 people, including two children.
