Changes to driving test booking for learner drivers begin May 12, 2026

The DVSA is changing how learner drivers book, change, and swap driving tests to reduce long waiting lists and curb bulk-booking. From May 12, only the learner can manage their test, and new rules govern changes, cancellation refunds, and moving test centres.

Why It Matters

The changes affect how quickly learners can secure a test date and how they manage rescheduling, potentially impacting costs and test readiness.

Timeline

3 Events

From June 9, 2026, moving tests limited to three nearby centres

June 9, 2026

From June 9, 2026, if you need to move your test, you can only move it to the three test centres closest to where your test is booked.

From May 12, 2026, new booking rules for learners

May 12, 2026

From May 12, 2026, only you may book, change or swap your own driving test; your driving instructor cannot book on your behalf. Tests already booked by instructors remain unaffected. When booking, you must enter your instructor's reference number to confirm their availability. You may help someone you know book and manage their driving test, but the person must be with you while you help, and all confirmations must be sent to their email or phone. If the other person does not have an email, you may help set up an account for them. Fees remain £62 on weekdays and £75 on evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Speak to your instructor to ensure you are ready for the test.

Two changes rule applies from March 31, 2026

March 31, 2026

From March 31, 2026, you can only make two changes to a booked driving test. If you had used up all your changes under the old rules (which allowed six changes), you can make two more changes from March 31. A change can involve altering the date/time, changing the test centre, or swapping your slot with another learner; if you change more than one thing at the same time, it counts as one change. If the DVSA changes your test, that does not count as a change. If you need more than two changes, you must cancel your test and rebook. Cancellations are refunded if made at least 10 working days before the test date.
