Bhalswa, Okhla landfills to be flattened this year; Ghazipur site to be cleared by 2027-end: Delhi Mayor

He appealed to residents to cooperate by segregating waste and paying taxes regularly.

Wahi acknowledged an estimated fiscal deficit of around ₹15,000 crore and said the MCD would increase revenue through parking fees, house tax and property tax collections while plugging leakages.

The Mayor said officials were instructed to improve conditions for sanitation workers and ensure they have adequate tools and facilities, noting improvements already visible.

Wahi noted that delays in classes 4 and 5 textbooks were resolved and books would reach students before holidays; uniform assistance funds had already been transferred directly to parents’ accounts, with claims of large-scale disbursal.

The Mayor announced a cow dung-based biogas plant is expected to begin operations by July, capable of processing 200 tonnes of cow dung to generate gas.

On monsoon readiness, Wahi stated around 70% of drain desilting had been completed, with lakhs of tonnes of silt removed using modern machines and efforts to completely clean smaller drains.

The Mayor said sterilisation drives and anti-rabies vaccination are being carried out in line with Supreme Court directions, with free anti-rabies vaccination available at several MCD hospitals and work on modern dog shelters, including a proposed kennel in Dwarka, underway.

Wahi said the MCD is working continuously on biomining and remediation of the three legacy waste sites, with machinery installation underway to expedite work.

In an interview with PTI, Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi stated that the MCD aims to clear the Bhalswa and Okhla landfill sites by the end of 2026 and complete remediation of the Ghazipur landfill by the end of 2027.
